New Sydney Fish Market

Sydney’s newest landmark, the new Sydney Fish Market is a stunning feat of architecture, engineering and construction. Built over and into Blackwattle Bay, the waterfront market designed by 3XN and BVN features a dramatic roof of timber, terracotta and pyramidal cassette panels.

Prism Facades were engaged for the glazed façade, terracotta, and the prefabricated roof panels sitting atop the cantilevering glulam timber roof structure.

The glazed façade balances visual transparency with the thermal performance requirements of the highly temperature controlled interior spaces of the functional fish market. The terracotta baguettes provide texture that flows from the edge of the roof down to the base of the stairs.

Comprised of prefabricated cassettes forming the pyramidal shapes, the roof design accommodates the varying geometry and movements of the timber, and allows for thermal expansion and contraction evenly across the very large spans of the building. The key to the roof cassette design is the four-way connections at each of the four-way junctions in the timber, which transformed the installation methodology, allowing the panels to be installed from underneath.
